| Acrylate |
Polymer and ion of acrylic acid (also known as 2 propenoic acid) and a strong irritant. |
| Adhesion |
The power of an ink to stick to the surface on which it is printed. In general, it is measured by cross-cut, scrape, or pull-off tests. |
| Apparent resolution |
The visually-equivalent resolution of an image printed with grayscale (variable drop sizes), compared to the same image printed with binary drops |
| Array |
An arrangement of individual inkjet printheads mounted across and/or along the substrate path |
| Binary inkjet |
Jetting a fixed size of drop, as opposed to variable sized drops used in grayscale printing. |
| Bitmap (bmp) |
An image made up of dots or pixels. It refers to a raster image, in which the image consists of rows or pixels rather than vector coordinates. |
| Calibration |
This is the act of adjusting the colour of one device relative to another, such as a monitor to a printer. It can also be the process of adjusting the colour of one ink system to some established standard. |
| Chiller |
A device that uses recirculated coolant (commonly water or oil-based) to precisely control equipment temperature at a pre-determined set-point. Onset S40 uses a free-standing chiller to regulate the temperature of the UV lamps. |
| CMYK |
Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key (Karbon/black) - subtractive four-colour ink model that describes each colour in terms of the quantity of each colour and black it contains. This is used extensively in the printing industry. Similar notation is used to represent the other supported ink colours ie. O = orange, Lm = light magenta. |
| Colour gamut |
The complete range of colours reproducible from a printing system on a specific substrate. |
| Continuous inkjet (CIJ) |
A system where there is a continuous flow of ink from a pressurised reservoir. |
| Contrast |
A measure of the rate of change of brightness in an image. High contrast implies dark black and bright white content. |
| CPU |
Stands for Central Processing Unit - that part of a computer that performs most of the data processing. |
| Density |
The darkness of a printed image. |
| DOD |
Stands for Drop on Demand. These printheads produce ink drops only when required. |
